Please continue on doing one day of maths times and table toppers each day. Listen to the times tables songs on youtube under 'laugh along and learn maths times table songs' for whatever tables we are focusing on this week in Table toppers.
This week in maths, we are going to learn all about 3D shapes. If you need to look back at 2D shapes Ms Connell covered it last week so you can have a quick look at her lesson to remind yourself of 2D shapes before we move onto 3D shapes.
You can find Ms Connells lesson on 2D shapes here: http://www.warrenmountprimary.com/Third-Class-Ms-Connell/Cracking-Maths/40115/Index.html
3D shapes are all about 3 dimensional shapes. They are not flat like a 2-D shape, they are measured in 3 ways: the length, the width and the height. This week we are going to focus on 7 shapes:
- Cube
- Cuboid
- Cylinder
- Cone
- Sphere
- Triangular prism
- Pyramid
By the end of the week we want to be able to
- recognise the shapes and their properties
- Construct the shapes
- Draw the shapes
- Decide if the shape is regular or irregular
- Solve problems using these shapes
Watch this song to remind you of some of the shapes:
Activity 1:
At the bottom of the page I have left pictures of the properties of each shape we are learning this week. This includes what they look like, if they have edges (lines where two faces meet), face, vertices (corners). Please read them carefully and look at the pictures and point out the properties in them.
Activity 2:
3D shape hunt: Go on a hunt around your home or garden and find at least 5 examples of 3d shapes. Play with someone in your house and make it a competition. Who can find the largest or smallest 3d shape or the player who finds the most of each shape. Have fun, make your own rules.
Activity 3:
Using the pictures below to help you try draw the shapes. Make sure you use a ruler to help you measure the lines and remember to check if the edges are the same length or not.
Activity 4:
After you draw them, find some materials in your house to help you construct 3d shapes. Build castles or a house using 3d shapes. Here’s a video to help you.
Activity 5:
Below are some worksheets to help you recap on what you have learned above. You can do these on Thursday and Friday. Try do them without help and then look back if you need help at the end. You can also go to your cracking maths book and find 3D shapes for more help and activities.
